Shabana began her acting career at a very young age, which limited her formal educational opportunities.

She is largely self-taught, gaining her vast knowledge and experience through decades of hands-on work in the cinematic arts.

Shabana began her remarkable journey in the entertainment sector as a child artist in the 1961 film Notun Sur. However, her true breakthrough came in 1967 when she starred in the immensely successful Urdu film Chakori. Acting opposite Pakistani superstar Nadeem, her performance instantly skyrocketed her to pan-regional fame.

Throughout the 1970s, she solidified her status as the leading lady of Bangladeshi cinema through a series of blockbuster hits. She formed legendary on-screen pairings with iconic actors such as Alamgir, Razzak, and Nadeem. Her ability to deliver emotionally resonant performances made her the top choice for dramatic and family-oriented films.

The 1980s marked the golden era of her career, during which she achieved unprecedented critical success. She delivered unforgettable performances in masterworks like Sokhi Tumi Kar (1980), Dui Poisar Alta (1982), and Bhat De (1984). These films not only dominated the box office but also swept the national awards circuit, breaking industry records.

In addition to her acting, she founded SS Productions in 1979 alongside her husband, Wahid Sadique. This production house became a powerhouse in Dhallywood, producing numerous commercially successful and critically acclaimed movies. Her dual role as an actress and producer gave her extraordinary influence over the creative direction of the industry.

In 1998, after a glorious career spanning nearly three decades and nearly 300 films, Shabana announced her retirement from acting. She left the industry at the height of her respect and popularity, moving to the United States to prioritize her family. In 2017, the Government of Bangladesh honored her unmatched legacy with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.

Shabana was born as Afroza Sultana Ratna in the Dabua area of Raozan, Chittagong, in present-day Bangladesh. Despite coming from a modest background, her exceptional talent was evident from a very young age. Her family was supportive of her early entry into the arts, which paved the way for her historic career.

In 1973, at the peak of her early fame, she married renowned Bangladeshi film producer Wahid Sadique. The couple built a formidable personal and professional partnership, successfully running their production company while raising their family. They have two daughters and one son, all of whom have pursued highly successful academic and professional paths outside the film industry.

Following her retirement in 1998, Shabana immigrated to the United States to focus entirely on her family and personal well-being. She now divides her time between the US and Bangladesh, leading a devout and philanthropic lifestyle. In recent years, she has occasionally appeared in public alongside her husband to support local charitable initiatives and political campaigns.
