Aslam Chowdhury

Aslam Chowdhury completed his early schooling in the Chittagong region of Bangladesh.

He pursued higher education at the University of Chittagong, where he successfully obtained a Master of Commerce (MCom) degree, providing a strong academic foundation for his future business endeavors.

Aslam Chowdhury began his professional journey in the business sector, establishing Confidence Salt, which became the cornerstone of his entrepreneurial empire. He subsequently founded the Rising Group, a massive Chittagong-based industrial conglomerate. Under his leadership, the group expanded its operations into highly lucrative sectors, including ship recycling, steel re-rolling, and refueling. His success as an industrialist made him one of the most prominent business figures in the Chittagong region.

Leveraging his business success and local influence, Chowdhury entered active politics in 2001 following the formation of the Four Party Alliance government. He formally aligned himself with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and steadily climbed the party ranks. He made his first major political bid in the 2008 Bangladeshi general election, running for the Chittagong-4 constituency. Although he finished as the runner-up with over 112,000 votes, he firmly established his political base.

His political career faced severe turbulence in 2016 when he was appointed as the Joint Secretary General of the BNP. Shortly after his appointment, he was arrested by Bangladeshi authorities following reports of a controversial meeting with an Israeli politician in India. The government accused him of conspiring against the state, leading to a prolonged period of legal battles and incarceration. He spent over eight years in prison, becoming a prominent symbol of the political opposition's struggles.

In August 2024, amidst shifting political landscapes in Bangladesh, Chowdhury was finally released from jail. His release was met with significant enthusiasm from his supporters in Chittagong. He quickly reintegrated into the BNP's leadership structure and was appointed as an Adviser to the Chairperson's Advisory Council. His return to active politics reinvigorated the party's presence in the critical Chittagong region.

By 2026, Chowdhury has fully resumed his political and business activities. He was cleared by the Supreme Court to contest the parliamentary elections for the Chittagong-4 constituency once again. Concurrently, his businesses under the Rising Group have undergone significant debt restructuring with the central bank, allowing his industrial operations to recover. He remains a highly formidable and resilient figure in Bangladeshi public life.

Aslam Chowdhury was born to Golam Hossain Chowdhury and Halima Khatun Chowdhury in Faujdarhat, a town in the Chittagong District of Bangladesh. He places a strong emphasis on education and completed his postgraduate studies at the University of Chittagong. His deep roots in Chittagong have been the absolute foundation of both his business empire and his political support base.

Chowdhury is known for maintaining a relatively private family life, shielding his relatives from the intense and often volatile nature of Bangladeshi politics. His eight-year imprisonment placed an immense strain on his personal and business affairs, yet he maintained his political convictions throughout the ordeal. He frequently credits the support of his local constituents and party loyalists for helping him endure his lengthy incarceration.

As a prominent industrialist, Chowdhury's businesses have created thousands of jobs in the Chittagong region. Despite facing allegations of significant corporate defaults in the past, he has worked closely with financial institutions to restructure his debts and stabilize his companies. He continues to navigate the complex intersection of heavy industry and national politics, remaining a deeply influential figure in his home district.
