Keir Rodney Starmer

Keir Starmer attended Reigate Grammar School in Surrey. He was the first in his family to attend university.

He studied law at the University of Leeds, graduating with a first-class Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in 1985. He subsequently pursued postgraduate studies at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, where he earned a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) degree in 1986.

Keir Starmer built a highly distinguished legal career before entering politics. He worked as a human rights barrister, taking on high-profile cases across the globe. His legal acumen led to his appointment as the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and Head of the Crown Prosecution Service from 2008 to 2013, a role for which he was later knighted for services to law and criminal justice.

He entered Parliament in 2015 as the MP for Holborn and St Pancras. After serving in Jeremy Corbyn's shadow cabinet, notably as Shadow Brexit Secretary, he was elected Leader of the Labour Party in 2020. He spent the next four years ruthlessly shifting the party towards the political center, rooting out left-wing factions, and presenting Labour as a government-in-waiting. This strategy culminated in a landslide victory in the 2024 general election, making him the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

However, his time as Prime Minister proved incredibly turbulent. In early May 2026, his government faced a severe reckoning during the local and regional elections. The Labour Party suffered a catastrophic net loss of over 1,100 local council seats across England and was ousted from power in Wales after 27 years of dominance. Concurrently, the anti-immigration Reform UK party made massive electoral gains.

These results were widely interpreted as a blunt, unofficial referendum on Starmer's struggling two-year-old government. Following the disastrous outcome, he faced intense and growing calls to resign from both the public and members of his own party. While high-profile cabinet members initially held their fire, numerous Labour lawmakers publicly urged him to set a clear timetable for his departure. Defiant, Starmer insisted he would not walk away, pledging instead to "rebuild and show the path forward" by reshuffling his advisory team and attempting to regain public trust.

Keir Starmer was born in Southwark, London, and raised in Surrey. He comes from a working-class background; his father was a toolmaker and his mother was a nurse who suffered from Still's disease, a rare and debilitating condition. He was named after Keir Hardie, the founder of the Labour Party.

In 2007, he married Victoria Alexander, a former solicitor who now works in occupational health for the NHS. The couple has two teenage children and resides in North London. Starmer is famously fiercely protective of his family's privacy, strictly keeping his children out of the public eye and media spotlight.

Off the political stage, he is a passionate football fan and a dedicated supporter of Arsenal FC. Despite the immense pressure and the £167,000 prime ministerial salary, he often speaks about his desire to maintain a grounded family life amidst the intense scrutiny of Westminster.
