Khan developed his foundational socio-political expertise through active participation in prominent labor movements and national trade union training programs during his youth.

Nazrul Islam Khan began his long and impactful career not as a traditional politician, but as a fiercely dedicated labor rights activist in the 1970s. He quickly emerged as a prominent voice for the working class, becoming the president of the Pakistan Machine Tools Factory (now the Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory) in 1970. During the pivotal eve of the Bangladesh Liberation War in March 1971, Khan was appointed as the treasurer of the All-party Alliance Council formed in Joydebpur, showcasing his early leadership and organizational skills.

Following the independence of Bangladesh, his dedication to the labor movement led him to become the founding general secretary of the Bangladesh Jatyatabadi Sramik Dal in 1979. He dedicated decades to organizing workers and advocating for fair wages, ultimately rising to the position of president of the Sramik Dal in 2003. His comprehensive understanding of labor dynamics also led him to contribute heavily to the strategic organization of labor in a rapidly developing Bangladesh.

Transitioning into diplomatic and higher-level political roles, Khan served as the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Kuwait from July 2004 to August 2006. This diplomatic assignment broadened his administrative expertise and allowed him to successfully represent Bangladeshi socio-economic interests on the international stage. Domestically, his strategic acumen saw him appointed as the chief of the BNP's polls coordination committee for multiple general elections, where he orchestrated large-scale political campaigns.

His enduring loyalty and political wisdom were rewarded when he was inducted into the BNP's highest policy-making body, the National Standing Committee. Throughout the challenging political climates of the 2010s and early 2020s, Khan remained a steadfast figure, frequently acting as a primary spokesperson and key strategist for his party during times of intense political opposition.

A crowning achievement of his extensive career occurred in February 2026, when he was officially appointed as an Adviser to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman. Serving with the rank of a minister, Khan was entrusted with immense responsibilities, reflecting his indispensable status as a veteran statesman who successfully transitioned from a grassroots labor leader to one of the highest executive advisory roles in the nation.

Nazrul Islam Khan was born in Islampur, Jamalpur, growing up with a profound awareness of the socio-economic struggles faced by the working class in Bangladesh. His early experiences significantly shaped his lifelong dedication to fighting for labor rights and democratic governance. Despite his high-profile political status, Khan is known for his relatively modest lifestyle and his approachability, frequently engaging directly with grassroots workers and local party activists.

While he generally keeps his family life out of the intense political spotlight, his relatives have been a continuous source of support throughout his tumultuous career, which has included periods of severe political unrest and opposition struggles.

He is also known for his excellent oratorical skills, often utilizing his deep knowledge of Bengali history to connect with massive crowds during political rallies.
