Akhilesh Yadav

Akhilesh Yadav completed his early schooling in Etawah and the Dholpur Military School in Rajasthan.

He subsequently earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Environmental Engineering from the University of Mysore in 1995, and later pursued further studies at the University of Sydney in Australia.

Akhilesh Yadav's political career began early, heavily influenced by his father, Mulayam Singh Yadav, a veteran Indian politician. He officially entered the electoral fray in 2000, winning a by-election to the 13th Lok Sabha from the Kannauj constituency. He quickly established himself as a dedicated parliamentarian, serving on various committees related to food, civil supplies, ethics, and the environment. He successfully retained his Kannauj seat in the 2004 and 2009 general elections, steadily building his political base.

The turning point in his career arrived ahead of the 2012 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections. Yadav led a highly energetic and modernized campaign for the Samajwadi Party, connecting with young voters through extensive statewide tours. His efforts resulted in a sweeping victory for the party. In March 2012, at the age of 38, he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, making history as the youngest person to hold the office.

During his five-year tenure as Chief Minister, Yadav focused heavily on large-scale infrastructural development and social welfare. His government initiated major projects such as the Lucknow Metro, the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, and the Lucknow International Ekana Cricket Stadium. He also implemented schemes for laptop distribution to students, unemployment allowances, and pensions for women. Despite these developmental efforts, his party lost the 2017 assembly elections to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Following the 2017 defeat, Yadav focused on rebuilding and consolidating his leadership within the Samajwadi Party, navigating a highly publicized internal family feud with his uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav. He was elected to the 17th Lok Sabha from Azamgarh in 2019. In 2022, he shifted his focus back to state politics, winning the Karhal assembly seat and serving as the Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha, leading a much stronger opposition presence.

By 2026, Yadav has returned to the national stage. In the 2024 general elections, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Kannauj in the 18th Lok Sabha. As the president of the Samajwadi Party, he continues to be the principal political challenger in Uttar Pradesh, maintaining a strong focus on secularism, social justice, and agricultural reforms. His leadership remains crucial to the dynamics of the national opposition coalition.

Akhilesh Yadav is married to Dimple Yadav, who is also a prominent politician and a Member of Parliament. The couple tied the knot in November 1999 and have built a strong political and personal partnership. They are the proud parents of three children: two daughters, Aditi and Tina, and a son, Arjun. The Yadav family is deeply rooted in the political and cultural fabric of Uttar Pradesh.

Before entering the turbulent world of politics, Yadav completed his formal education in engineering. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Environmental Engineering from the University of Mysore, and he also studied at the University of Sydney. He is an avid sports fan, with a particular passion for football and cricket, frequently promoting sports infrastructure during his political tenure. His hobbies include reading, listening to music, and watching films.

Yadav's personal life has often intersected with intense political drama, most notably the family feud within the Samajwadi Party between him and his uncle, Shivpal Singh Yadav. Despite these internal challenges, Akhilesh successfully consolidated his control over the party founded by his father, Mulayam Singh Yadav, who passed away in 2022. He continues to honor his father's legacy while charting his own modernized political course.
