Sumaiya Rahaman Shimul

Sumaiya Shimu completed her early education across institutions in Khulna and Dhaka, establishing a strong academic foundation. She subsequently enrolled at Jahangirnagar University, where she earned both her Bachelor of Social Science and Master of Social Science degrees in Government and Politics.

Demonstrating a profound commitment to higher learning, she pursued a doctorate at the same institution. She successfully completed her PhD in 2017 from the Department of Drama and Dramatics, with her extensive research focusing on the artistic and socio-economic perspectives of women in acting.

Sumaiya Shimu initiated her professional journey in the visual arts in 1999, stepping into the spotlight as a model for a Lever Brothers television commercial filmed in Bombay. This early exposure quickly paved the way for her television acting debut the same year in the drama "Ekhane Ator Paoa Jai". Her natural screen presence immediately marked her as a promising talent in the competitive Bangladeshi entertainment industry.

Her major breakthrough arrived in 2008 when she delivered a captivating performance in the highly acclaimed television drama "Shopno Chura". This role resonated deeply with viewers across the nation and firmly established her as a leading actress. Her exceptional portrayal in this production earned her the prestigious Meril Prothom Alo Award for Best TV Actress.

Throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s, she maintained a prolific presence on television, securing numerous nominations for her performances in popular series like "Lolita" and "Radio Chocolate". She demonstrated remarkable versatility by accepting challenging roles, such as her compelling portrayal in "Lake Drive Lane", where she played a struggling ghostwriter. She also expanded her portfolio with a notable appearance in the feature film "Bachelor".

In addition to her thriving acting career, she ventured into the realm of social activism, recognizing the platform her fame provided. She assumed the role of Goodwill Ambassador for Relief International in 2017, actively raising awareness and critical funding for the Rohingya refugee crisis. Her advocacy work highlighted her dedication to leveraging her public profile for humanitarian causes.

In recent years, she marked a successful transition to the rapidly growing digital landscape, making her OTT debut in the production "Besura". Furthermore, she founded "Better Future for Women" in 2019, a non-profit organization focused on entrepreneurship and skill-building. Her dual focus on modern entertainment mediums and grassroots activism defines the current era of her distinguished career.

Sumaiya Shimu was born in the culturally rich district of Narail, Bangladesh, and spent her formative years pursuing her education in Khulna and Dhaka. She was raised in an environment that valued academic excellence, which shaped her lifelong commitment to continuous learning and intellectual growth. Her early experiences instilled in her a strong sense of community and social responsibility.

On August 28, 2015, she married Nazrul Islam in a private ceremony surrounded by close friends and family. At the time of their marriage, her husband served as the Bangladesh Country Director for Relief International, an international non-governmental organization. The couple shares a mutual dedication to humanitarian work and global welfare initiatives.

In November 2023, the couple celebrated a significant milestone when they welcomed twin boys at a private hospital in Dhaka. She seamlessly balances her demanding professional commitments with her family life, often expressing deep gratitude for the support system around her. She remains a fiercely private individual regarding her children, choosing to shield them from the intense media scrutiny associated with her fame.
