Kusal Perera attended the prestigious Royal College in Colombo, where he honed his cricketing skills. He represented the school team with great distinction, scoring heavily in the prestigious Royal-Thomian encounter and catching the eyes of national youth selectors.

Kusal Perera made his professional debut for Colts Cricket Club in 2009. His aggressive ball-striking in domestic cricket quickly earned him a spot in the Sri Lankan A team and subsequently the national squad. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Australia in early 2013, instantly making an impact with his attacking approach. His first major international century came in a T20 match against Pakistan later that year, solidifying his spot in the white-ball teams.

Throughout the mid-2010s, Perera established himself as an integral part of Sri Lanka's limited-overs setup. He made his Test debut against India in 2015, proving that his attacking style could translate to the longest format. However, his career faced a major hurdle when he was wrongfully suspended for a doping violation in late 2015. He was completely cleared and reinstated by the ICC in 2016, returning to the field with renewed determination.

The defining moment of his career arrived in February 2019 during a Test match against South Africa at Kingsmead, Durban. Chasing an improbable 304 for victory, Sri Lanka were reduced to 226 for 9. Perera then played an astonishing innings of 153 not out, forging a record-breaking 78-run last-wicket partnership with Vishwa Fernando to guide his team to a historic victory. The knock was universally hailed as a masterpiece of modern Test batting.

In 2021, Perera was briefly appointed as the captain of the Sri Lankan ODI squad. Despite facing numerous injury setbacks, including a chronic shoulder issue, he continued to be a crucial match-winner. He fought his way back to fitness to participate in major ICC tournaments, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the national cause. In early 2025, he set a record for the fastest T20I century by a Sri Lankan, scoring a spectacular 101 off just 46 balls against New Zealand.

By 2026, while his national appearances became less frequent, Perera became a highly sought-after player in franchise cricket. He secured lucrative contracts in the PSL, representing the Lahore Qalandars before joining the newly formed Hyderabad Kingsmen for a massive PKR 31 million. Continuing to entertain crowds with his boundary-hitting prowess, Kusal Perera's legacy as a fearless match-winner is firmly secured.

Kusal Perera was born in Kalubowila and raised in a supportive, sports-loving family. Despite his flamboyant style on the pitch, he is known to be quite reserved and polite off the field. He maintains a disciplined lifestyle, which has been crucial in his ongoing battles with sports-related injuries and extensive rehabilitation programs.

He married his long-time partner, Kalana, in March 2020. The wedding was a well-attended event featuring many of his international teammates and senior cricket officials. The couple enjoys a quiet life in Colombo, often participating in religious and community activities during Perera's off-season periods away from the franchise circuit.

Outside of cricket, Perera is passionate about helping young athletes. He frequently sponsors cricket equipment for underprivileged children in rural Sri Lanka and makes quiet donations to various local charities. He also enjoys listening to traditional Sri Lankan music and spending time at the beach with his close friends and family.
