Shakib Al Hasan began his cricketing journey at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) before making his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in August 2006. His breakthrough year came in 2008 when he took a sensational 7-wicket haul against New Zealand, establishing himself as a premier all-rounder. By 2009, he had climbed to the number one spot in the ICC ODI all-rounder rankings, a position he would fiercely defend for over a decade.

His dominance extended into the lucrative world of T20 franchise cricket. Shakib became a global superstar, securing contracts in the IPL, BPL, CPL, and PSL. He won two Indian Premier League titles with the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012 and 2014, and clinched multiple Bangladesh Premier League championships with the Dhaka Dominators. His adaptability across different conditions made him one of the most sought-after freelance cricketers in the world.

The 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup stood as the pinnacle of his individual brilliance. Shakib delivered a historic performance, scoring 606 runs and taking 11 wickets. He became the first player in World Cup history to score over 600 runs and claim 10 wickets in a single tournament, cementing his status as a modern-day great despite Bangladesh's overall team struggles.

In late 2023, Shakib embarked on a controversial political career by joining the ruling Awami League. He successfully contested the 2024 general election to become the Member of Parliament for the Magura-1 constituency. However, his political tenure was cut short after just seven months when the parliament was dissolved following the July Revolution, a period during which he faced severe public backlash and legal accusations.

Retiring from T20Is and Tests in 2024, Shakib officially concluded his legendary international career following the 2025 Champions Trophy. Today, he focuses on his extensive business portfolio, which includes Monarch Holdings and various commodities, while reflecting on a legacy defined by unparalleled athletic brilliance and polarizing public actions.

Shakib Al Hasan was born in the Magura District to Khondoker Masroor Reza and Shirin Reza. His passion for sports was evident early on, and he was frequently hired by neighboring villages to play in local tournaments before being scouted by the national sports institute.

In December 2012, Shakib married Umme Ahmed Shishir, a Bangladeshi-American software engineer and model. The couple first met in 2010 while Shakib was playing county cricket for Worcestershire in England. They have since welcomed three children—two daughters, including Aubrey, and a son—and frequently split their time between Bangladesh and the United States.

Outside of cricket and politics, Shakib is a prominent businessman. He runs a brokerage firm, an event management company, and deals in commodities. He is also actively involved in charity through the Shakib Al Hasan Foundation, which has provided significant aid during national emergencies, though his public image remains complex due to various controversies.
