Takashi Usami began his professional career with Gamba Osaka, making history in 2009 by becoming the club's youngest ever debutant. He quickly established himself as a sensational young talent, winning the J.League Best Young Player award in 2010. His extraordinary domestic performances inevitably caught the attention of Europe's elite footballing institutions.

In the summer of 2011, Usami secured a dream loan move to German powerhouse Bayern Munich. While his playing time was limited due to fierce competition, he gained invaluable experience training alongside world-class players and famously became the first Japanese player to reach a UEFA Champions League final squad. He subsequently spent a season with TSG Hoffenheim, further adapting to the Bundesliga's intense physical demands.

Following a brief and highly prolific return to Gamba Osaka where he won the domestic treble in 2014, Usami returned to Germany in 2016. He signed with FC Augsburg before enjoying a highly successful stint with Fortuna Düsseldorf. During his time at Düsseldorf, his crucial goals helped the club secure the 2. Bundesliga title and promotion to the top flight, cementing his status as a reliable European forward.

Seeking to bring his vast experience back to his roots, Usami returned to Gamba Osaka in July 2019. Over the subsequent seasons, he evolved his playing style from an explosive winger to a more complete, playmaking forward. Throughout the 2025 and 2026 campaigns, he continued to be a focal point for the club's attack, consistently delivering key passes and leading by example on the pitch.

Internationally, Usami represented the Japanese national team for nearly a decade, earning 27 caps and scoring crucial goals. He prominently featured in the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. His contributions to the Samurai Blue and his extensive club career have permanently etched his name into the annals of Japanese football history.
