Suryakumar Yadav attended the Atomic Energy Central School in Mumbai during his formative years. He subsequently enrolled at Pillai College of Arts, Commerce and Science, where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree while actively advancing his professional cricket career.

Suryakumar Yadav's professional career began in the highly competitive Mumbai domestic circuit, where he quickly established himself as a highly reliable run-scorer. He made his first-class debut in the 2010-11 Ranji Trophy season, showcasing glimpses of his immense potential with an elegant batting technique. His consistent performances earned him an early IPL contract with the Mumbai Indians in 2012, though he initially struggled to find consistent playing time in a star-studded lineup.

He subsequently moved to the Kolkata Knight Riders, where he played a crucial role as an explosive lower-order finisher. Suryakumar Yadav was born into a middle-class family; his father, Ashok Kumar Yadav, worked as an electrical engineer at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. In July 2016, he married Devisha Shetty, a trained classical dancer and dance coach whom he met during his college years.
