João Cancelo began his footballing education at his local club FC Barreirense, where his raw technical skills and pace were quickly noticed by scouts.

In 2007, he joined the prestigious Benfica youth academy, spending several years refining his tactical understanding and defensive positioning before graduating to the senior squad in 2013.

João Cancelo's professional career launched with Benfica, where he made his senior debut in 2014 and briefly contributed to their Primeira Liga-winning campaign. His early life was marked by a profound tragedy in 2013 when his mother, Filomena, was killed in a tragic car accident in which Cancelo and his brother were also passengers.
