Mukesh Kumar completed his basic education in his hometown of Gopalganj, Bihar, where he initially developed an interest in sports.

After moving to Kolkata to assist his father, he focused entirely on professional cricket, honing his skills through grueling club matches in the local Bengal leagues rather than pursuing higher academic degrees.

Mukesh Kumar's professional cricketing journey began with his first-class debut for Bengal during the 2015-16 Ranji Trophy season. His early years were characterized by a sheer determination to bowl long, grueling spells and extract maximum assistance from unhelpful domestic pitches. His mastery of the off-stump channel and subtle natural swing quickly made him one of Bengal's most trusted strike bowlers, forming a formidable pace battery.

The major turning point in his domestic career arrived during the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season. In a crucial semi-final encounter, he dismantled a star-studded Karnataka batting lineup with a brilliant six-wicket haul, single-handedly propelling Bengal into the tournament final.
