İlkay Gündoğan

Gündoğan spent his early youth development at several local clubs, including SV Heßler 06 and SSV Buer, between 1993 and 2005.

He then officially joined the highly respected youth academy of VfL Bochum in 2005, where he meticulously completed his formal football education before moving to 1. FC Nürnberg in 2009.

İlkay Gündoğan officially began his professional football journey with 1. FC Nürnberg in 2009, where his incredibly poised and technically brilliant midfield performances as a young teenager quickly caught the undivided attention of top German clubs. His undeniable, elite potential prompted a major transfer to Borussia Dortmund in 2011, effectively launching him directly into the intense spotlight of top-tier European football.

Under the demanding tactical guidance of manager Jürgen Klopp, Gündoğan rapidly developed into an absolutely indispensable, world-class central midfielder, famously helping Dortmund secure a prestigious domestic double in 2012 and crucially scoring in the 2013 UEFA Champions League final. In September 2025, Gündoğan embarked on a highly emotional and widely celebrated new chapter by signing a lucrative two-year contract with reigning Turkish champions Galatasaray. By early 2026, he has fully embraced the passionate footballing culture in Istanbul, effectively utilizing his world-class tactical intelligence and massive big-game experience to expertly guide Galatasaray's incredibly ambitious domestic and European campaigns.

İlkay Gündoğan was born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, to Turkish parents, giving him incredibly deep and proud ties to both German and Turkish cultures. His grandfather originally moved from Balıkesir, Turkey, to the Ruhr region of Germany to work as a miner, a humble family history that Gündoğan frequently and proudly highlights.

He is happily married to Italian model and television presenter Sara Arfaoui, and the glamorous couple joyfully welcomed their first child, a son named Kais, in 2023. The highly private family frequently travels between their luxurious homes in Europe and perfectly balances their demanding professional lives with a deeply committed, quiet domestic routine.
