Afif Hossain completed his early education in his hometown of Khulna. He later focused entirely on his cricketing career, attending the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP), the national sports institute, which played a pivotal role in honing his elite athletic skills during his highly formative teenage years.

Afif Hossain burst onto the professional scene during the 2016 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), playing for the Rajshahi Kings. As a 17-year-old debutant, he immediately made headlines by claiming five wickets, setting a record for the best bowling figures on debut in BPL history. This phenomenal start catapulted him into the national spotlight and marked the beginning of a highly promising athletic career.

In 2017, Afif made his First-class, List A, and T20 debuts, proving his immense versatility across all formats of the game. He continued to thoroughly impress in domestic leagues, notably securing a hat-trick for Abahani Limited in the 2016–17 Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League. His leadership and batting prowess were further showcased during the 2018 U-19 World Cup, where he impressively emerged as Bangladesh's leading run-scorer with 276 runs.

His T20I debut for the senior Bangladesh team came in 2018. He truly announced his arrival on the international stage with a stunning 52 off 26 balls against Zimbabwe, rescuing his team from a precarious 60 for 6. This match-winning performance solidified his permanent role as a dependable middle-order finisher. In 2021, he made his ODI debut and was subsequently named in the Bangladesh squad for the 2021 T20 World Cup.

The year 2022 saw Afif achieve a major career milestone when he scored an unbeaten 93 against Afghanistan. This vital innings was crucial in rescuing Bangladesh from a top-order collapse, setting the record for the highest individual score by a Bangladeshi batter at number seven in ODIs. By 2026, Afif's career experienced a dynamic resurgence as he was officially recalled to the national squad for the ODI series against Pakistan and New Zealand.
