Osako gained national fame during his time at Kagoshima Josei High School. He set a historic goalscoring record at the All Japan High School Soccer Tournament, a feat that immediately launched his highly anticipated professional career.

Yuya Osako burst onto the professional scene with Kashima Antlers in 2009, quickly demonstrating his elite goalscoring instincts. Over five seasons in the J1 League, he evolved into a complete forward, helping Kashima secure multiple domestic cups and the J1 League title. His exceptional 2013 season, where he scored prolifically, earned him a move to European football.

In January 2014, Osako joined German 2. Bundesliga side TSV 1860 Munich. He adapted to German football seamlessly, scoring on his debut. His impressive half-season form earned him a rapid transfer to 1. FC Köln in the top-flight Bundesliga. Internationally, Osako's crowning moment occurred during the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, where he scored the historic winning header against Colombia, securing Japan's first-ever World Cup victory against a South American nation. He remains a celebrated figure for the Samurai Blue, possessing an excellent goalscoring record across multiple Asian Cup and World Cup qualification cycles.

He is married to Japanese model Asami Miura, and the couple has cultivated a supportive family environment throughout his extensive career in Germany and Japan.
