Keio University (2011–2015)
Instead of turning professional immediately, Muto enrolled in the Faculty of Economics at Keio University. He continued playing collegiate football and was registered as a Special Designated Player by FC Tokyo, seamlessly transitioning to the professional ranks upon his graduation in March 2015.

Yoshinori Muto officially signed his first professional contract with FC Tokyo in 2014, making an immediate and explosive impact. During his debut season, he matched the J1 League record for the most goals scored by a rookie (13) and was named to the J.League Best XI. His sensational form continued into early 2015, prompting major interest from European clubs, including a notable bid from Chelsea.

In May 2015, Muto opted to join German Bundesliga side Mainz 05, signing a four-year contract. He adapted swiftly to German football, famously scoring a hat-trick against FC Augsburg in October 2015. Over three seasons, he proved to be a reliable and hardworking forward, contributing significantly to Mainz's attacking output despite facing occasional injury setbacks.

His performances in Germany led to a €9.5 million transfer to English Premier League club Newcastle United in July 2018. Muto scored his first goal for the club against Manchester United at Old Trafford. However, he struggled to secure consistent playing time under different managers and was eventually loaned out to Spanish La Liga side Eibar for the 2020-2021 season, where he gained further European experience.

Seeking to revitalize his career, Muto returned to Japan in August 2021, signing with ambitious J1 League outfit Vissel Kobe. This move sparked a remarkable career renaissance. Muto formed a devastating attacking partnership and was absolutely instrumental in guiding Vissel Kobe to back-to-back J1 League championships in 2023 and 2024, as well as an Emperor's Cup victory in 2024.

His dominant performances during the 2024 season were universally recognized, culminating in him winning the highly prestigious J.League Player of the Year award. Throughout the 2025 and 2026 seasons, Muto continued to lead Vissel Kobe's frontline in both domestic competitions and the AFC Champions League Elite, cementing his legacy as a club legend.
