Xherdan Shaqiri

Xherdan Shaqiri began his footballing education at SV Augst before joining the FC Basel youth academy in 2001, where his immense natural talent was immediately evident.

He spent several formative years in the Basel academy, refining his technical skills and physical conditioning, and eventually played for the reserve team before his promotion to the senior squad.

Xherdan Shaqiri's professional career launched brilliantly at FC Basel, where he made his senior debut in 2009. Xherdan Shaqiri was born in Gjilan, SFR Yugoslavia (now Kosovo), to Kosovar Albanian parents. His family emigrated to Switzerland when he was just a year old to escape the escalating conflict in the region. He deeply values his complex multicultural background and famously displays the flags of Switzerland, Kosovo, and Albania on his football boots.
