Varun Chakaravarthy attended St. Patrick's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai, where he played school-level cricket as a wicket-keeper batsman.

He subsequently enrolled at SRM University in Chennai, where he completed a comprehensive five-year degree in Architecture. He briefly worked as a freelance architect before fully committing to his cricketing comeback.

Varun Chakaravarthy's early cricket career saw him playing as a wicket-keeper batsman before he quit the sport entirely at age 17 to focus on his architecture degree. After working in the field for a few years, a lingering passion drew him back. He reinvented himself as a seam-bowling all-rounder, but a severe knee injury forced him to abandon pace bowling. During his rehabilitation, he began experimenting with spin, ultimately developing a unique, multi-variation mystery spin arsenal.

His spectacular rise began in 2018 in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), playing for the Siechem Madurai Panthers. He bowled an astonishing 40 dot balls in the final, leading his team to the title and instantly catching the attention of IPL scouts. This remarkable performance resulted in a massive ₹8.4 crore bid from Kings XI Punjab in the 2019 IPL auction, an unprecedented sum for an uncapped player.

His debut IPL season was marred by injury, leading to his release. However, he was quickly acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2020. This move proved transformative. He became the centerpiece of KKR's bowling attack, notably becoming the first bowler to take a five-wicket haul in the 2020 season. His exceptional form earned him a call-up to the Indian national team, making his international T20 debut against Sri Lanka in 2021.

He was a vital component of the KKR squad that reached the finals in 2021 and was instrumental in their glorious 2024 IPL Championship victory, finishing as one of the tournament's leading wicket-takers. His partnership with fellow spinner Sunil Narine created arguably the most lethal spin-bowling duo in franchise cricket history, suffocating opposition batting lineups in the middle overs.

As of 2026, Varun remains a core retained player for KKR. He continues to adapt his game, ensuring that international and domestic batters cannot easily decipher his subtle finger movements. His incredible journey from designing buildings to dismantling batting lineups remains a unique hallmark of modern T20 cricket history.

Varun Chakaravarthy was born in Bidar, Karnataka, but his family relocated to Chennai, Tamil Nadu, where he spent his formative years. His father, C.V. Vinod, is an employee at BSNL, and his mother, Malini, is a homemaker. They supported his difficult decision to leave a stable architecture job to chase a highly uncertain cricket career.

In December 2020, Varun married his long-time girlfriend, Neha Khedekar, in a private ceremony in Chennai. Their wedding was originally scheduled earlier but was delayed due to the global pandemic. The couple welcomed their first child, a son named Aathman, bringing immense joy to his personal life off the field.

Beyond cricket, Varun retains a keen interest in architecture and design, often sketching in his free time. He is known to be an introverted and deeply analytical individual, traits that perfectly complement his complex, problem-solving approach to spin bowling. He is also a massive fan of Tamil cinema.
