Yoshida's footballing foundation was built within the Nagoya Grampus academy system. He relocated to Nagoya as a youth to fully immerse himself in the club's developmental program, balancing his education at Toyota High School with his professional aspirations.

Maya Yoshida began his professional journey with Nagoya Grampus in 2007, quickly transitioning from a defensive midfielder to a commanding center-back. His consistent performances in the J-League prompted his first European move to Dutch club VVV-Venlo in 2010. During his time in the Netherlands, he gained crucial European experience, even scoring an unforgettable bicycle kick that highlighted his athletic capabilities.

In August 2012, Yoshida secured a major transfer to Southampton in the English Premier League.
