Mahendra Singh Dhoni attended DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir in Ranchi, where he actively participated in badminton and football before his sports teacher urged him to play cricket. He later enrolled at St. Columba's College in Hazaribagh for his undergraduate studies but dropped out to fully dedicate himself to his burgeoning professional cricket career.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's professional journey began as a ticket examiner for Indian Railways while playing domestic cricket for Bihar and later Jharkhand. After a string of impressive performances for India A, he made his ODI debut against Bangladesh in 2004. He quickly announced his arrival on the world stage with a sensational 148 against Pakistan and an explosive 183 not out against Sri Lanka.

In 2007, an inexperienced Indian squad was handed over to Dhoni for the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup in South Africa.
