Lungisani True-man Ngidi

Lungi Ngidi received a scholarship to attend Highbury Preparatory School, where his athletic talents first began to flourish.

He then earned a scholarship to the prestigious Hilton College School, initially playing rugby before focusing entirely on cricket under the guidance of former Zimbabwe all-rounder Neil Johnson.

Following his high school graduation, he enrolled at the University of Pretoria, pursuing a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree in Industrial Sociology.

Lungi Ngidi's professional cricket career ignited when he was included in the Northerns cricket team for the 2015 Africa T20 Cup. His raw pace and aggressive bowling style quickly turned heads, leading to Cricket South Africa naming him the Africa T20 Cup Player of the Year in July 2016. These early domestic accolades paved the way for his rapid inclusion in top-tier franchise tournaments, recognizing his potential as a future international star.

His highly anticipated international debut arrived in January 2017 in a T20I match against Sri Lanka, where he immediately impressed with his hostile bowling. The 2026 season brought intense challenges as Ngidi faced a terrifying head injury while playing for the Delhi Capitals against the Punjab Kings in the IPL. Falling awkwardly while attempting a catch, he suffered a severe concussion that required immediate hospitalization. Demonstrating immense resilience, he successfully navigated the mandatory concussion protocols and made a triumphant return to the playing XI, proving his unwavering dedication and fearlessness as an elite fast bowler.

Lungi Ngidi was raised in Kloof, Durban, in a modest household. His mother worked as a domestic worker and his father was a maintenance worker at a local school. His parents' immense sacrifices to support his early sporting ambitions have profoundly shaped his grounded perspective and relentless drive to succeed at the highest level.

Beyond the cricket pitch, Ngidi is known to be an intellectual and socially conscious individual, heavily influenced by his university studies in Industrial Sociology. He has been a vocal advocate for the Black Lives Matter movement within South African cricket, demonstrating his willingness to use his platform to address significant social issues.
