Joo Min-kyu's professional career began modestly when he was drafted by Goyang Hi in the K League Challenge (now K League 2) in 2014 after graduating from Hanyang University. In 2015, he moved to newly formed Seoul E-Land, where he truly announced himself as a lethal striker, scoring 23 goals in his debut season with the club. His impressive lower-league form earned him a brief stint at Ulsan Hyundai in 2019, but he struggled to secure consistent starting minutes.

Seeking a fresh start, Joo transferred to Jeju United in 2020. He was instrumental in helping Jeju win the K League 2 title and gain promotion. Back in the top flight, he exploded in 2021, scoring 22 goals to win the K League 1 top scorer award. His dominant performances earned him consecutive spots on the K League 1 Best XI, firmly establishing him as the premier domestic striker in South Korea.

In 2023, Joo returned to Ulsan HD and proved all of his remaining critics wrong. He was vital in helping the club secure back-to-back K League 1 championships in 2023 and 2024. He finished the 2023 season as the joint top scorer with 17 goals, capturing his second Golden Boot and cementing his legacy as one of the league's all-time greats.

In January 2025, seeking a new challenge to close out his career, Joo signed with Daejeon Hana Citizen. Continuing his prolific run, he provided vital veteran leadership and consistent goal-scoring through the 2025 and 2026 seasons. His ability to adapt to new systems and maintain his elite finishing touch well into his mid-thirties garnered widespread respect across the league.

Internationally, Joo's long-awaited call-up finally arrived in March 2024 under interim head coach Hwang Sun-hong. At 33 years and 333 days old, he became the oldest player to make his debut for the South Korea national team in a World Cup qualifier against Thailand. A few months later, he recorded a hat-trick of assists and scored his first international goal in a 7-0 victory over Singapore. His presence provides the national team with a crucial, experienced target man.

Joo Min-kyu was born in Cheongju, South Korea. He developed his footballing skills through the standard South Korean educational system, attending multiple high schools before playing collegiately at Hanyang University.
