Jonathan Edward Bernthal

After completing his high school education, Jon Bernthal attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, where he began to explore his interest in the performing arts.

He later moved to Russia to study at the prestigious Moscow Art Theatre School, gaining rigorous classical training. During his time there, he also played as a catcher for a semi-professional Russian baseball team.

Upon his return to the United States, Bernthal was noticed by the director of Harvard University's Institute for Advanced Theater Training at the American Repertory Theater in Massachusetts. He graduated from the program with a graduate certificate in 2002, cementing his extensive stage background.

Jon Bernthal began his professional acting career in 2002, initially taking on minor roles in various television shows and independent films while consistently performing in regional and off-Broadway theater. His early television work included a starring role on the CBS sitcom The Class from 2006 to 2007.

His major breakthrough arrived in 2010 when he was cast as the complex antagonist Shane Walsh in AMC's massive hit series The Walking Dead. The character's intense arc and Bernthal's gripping performance made him a recognizable face and opened the door to higher-profile film opportunities.

Following his departure from The Walking Dead, Bernthal transitioned to the big screen, securing prominent supporting roles in major films. He appeared in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), David Ayer's WWII drama Fury (2014) alongside Brad Pitt, and the critically acclaimed thriller Sicario (2015). He also co-starred with Ben Affleck in the action-thriller The Accountant (2016) and featured in Baby Driver (2017) and Ford v Ferrari (2019).

In 2015, Bernthal reached a new level of stardom when he was cast as Frank Castle, The Punisher, debuting in the second season of Marvel's Daredevil before leading his own spin-off series. His visceral and emotionally raw portrayal of the grieving vigilante became widely considered the definitive live-action version of the character. He later delivered an Emmy-winning performance as Mikey Berzatto in the acclaimed Hulu series The Bear and earned critical praise for his role in the HBO miniseries We Own This City (2022).

By 2026, Bernthal's career reached unprecedented heights. He starred in the hit Netflix crime thriller His & Hers opposite Tessa Thompson, which became the platform's most-watched show early in the year. He also made his Broadway debut in a stage adaptation of Dog Day Afternoon, reprised his iconic role in the Disney+ special The Punisher: One Last Kill, and starred in major summer blockbusters, including The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day alongside Tom Holland.

Jon Bernthal was born into a supportive family; his father, Eric Lawrence Bernthal, is a lawyer, and his mother is Joan Lurie. He has two brothers: Nicholas, an orthopedic surgeon and UCLA professor, and Thomas, a consulting agency CEO married to former Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. The brothers collectively run the nonprofit organization Drops Fill Buckets, which uses an entrepreneurial approach to create positive community impact.

On September 25, 2010, Bernthal married Erin Angle, a trauma nurse and the niece of WWE Hall of Fame wrestler Kurt Angle. The couple tied the knot in Potomac, Maryland, and have built a strong, enduring partnership. They share three children: sons Henry and Billy, and daughter Adeline, who even appeared alongside her father in the 2026 special The Punisher: One Last Kill.

Outside of acting, Bernthal is a passionate advocate for animal rights and pit bull ownership. He serves as a spokesperson for the Animal Farm Foundation, an organization dedicated to rescuing and promoting the equal treatment of pit bulls. He personally owns three pit bulls, who frequently accompany him to film sets and have even made on-screen cameos in his projects. The family currently resides in Ojai, California.
