Gulshan Ara Akter completed her early schooling in Jessore before her family relocated.

She finished her secondary and higher secondary education in Dhaka, balancing her academic responsibilities with her early interests in the performing arts.

Champa initiated her extraordinary acting journey on the small screen, making her television debut in 1981 with the Bangladesh Television (BTV) drama "Dub Satar." Directed by Abdullah Al Mamun, this early role immediately showcased her natural acting sensibilities and on-screen magnetism. Following her successful debut, she quickly became a prominent face on BTV, appearing in highly popular dramas such as "Sahabjadir Kalo Nekab," "Akash Bariye Dao," and "Ekhane Nongor," which endeared her to households across the nation.

In 1986, Champa made her highly anticipated transition to mainstream cinema with the film "Tin Kanya," directed by Shibli Sadik. The film was uniquely significant as it was produced by her eldest sister, Shuchanda, and featured all three sisters—Shuchanda, Bobita, and Champa—acting together. Playing the role of a determined police inspector, Champa delivered a breakout performance that proved she possessed the star power to thrive in the fiercely competitive film industry.

The 1990s marked the golden era of Champa’s cinematic career, characterized by a series of critically acclaimed, award-winning performances. She won her first Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Actress for her unforgettable portrayal in the cinematic masterpiece "Padma Nadir Majhi" (1992). She followed this triumph with two more Best Actress National Awards for her stellar work in "Anya Jibon" (1995) and "Uttarer Khep" (2000), firmly establishing herself as the leading dramatic actress of her generation.

In addition to her success in dramatic roles, Champa was a highly bankable star in commercial cinema, delivering massive hits like "Golapi Ekhon Dhakay" (1994) and "Lal Darja" (1997). As she matured in the industry, she gracefully transitioned into powerful supporting roles that continued to garner critical acclaim. She won two National Film Awards for Best Supporting Actress for her poignant performances in "Shasti" (2004) and "Chandragrohon" (2008), proving her enduring versatility.

In recent years, Champa has remained actively engaged in the entertainment industry, balancing her time between selective film projects and television appearances. She has featured in contemporary hits like "Bishwoshundori" (2020), "Shaan" (2020), and the internationally recognized "Rickshaw Girl." Gulshan Ara Akter was born into a large and artistically gifted family in Jessore, Bangladesh. The tragic loss of her mother when Champa was just ten years old deeply affected her, but she found solace and inspiration in her older sisters, Bobita and Shuchanda, who were already blazing trails in the film industry.

In 1982, before achieving massive fame, Champa married successful businessman Shohidul Islam Khan. Their enduring marriage has been a pillar of stability throughout her demanding career in the spotlight. The couple shares a loving daughter named Esha, and Champa has always prioritized balancing her rigorous shooting schedules with her family responsibilities.

Beyond her cinematic endeavors, Champa is an avid traveler and a passionate advocate for various social causes.
